Lantern Festival - November 2009

Dear Parents:

Get in the spirit of celebrating the beauty of fall.

This year’s LANTERN FESTIVAL will take place on

  Wednesday, November 11, 2009             Time: 5:45 PM- 6:30 PM

(Rain date: November 18, 2009, same time)

We will have regular classes from 4:15 PM- 5:35 PM.

At 5:40 PM all parents/ guardians are asked to come back to German School and wait for their children in front of the building or assist their children’s teachers. By then teachers will have their students lined up outside the building. While some children will make their own lanterns in class, others will need to bring them from home. There are strict fire codes in this country. Please obey them and do not light any candles etc. inside the building.

As in the past, the parade will be led by St. Martin, sitting on his horse. Students, teachers and parents will follow singing traditional “Laternenlieder”. Later the parade will proceed to the elementary school playground where the story of St. Martin will be reenacted.

After the parade students, teachers and parents will go back to their classrooms to pick up their  St. Martin’s treat.

Frau Pfister will be the “master of ceremony”. Frau Mageras is in charge of the music program.

According to history and legend, St. Martin was a Roman mercenary who encountered a beggar one freezing night. He had nothing to offer him, so he cut his cloak in half to share with the beggar. His tale of compassion spread throughout the country, and later Martin was nominated Bishop of Tours.
The celebration commemorates St. Martin and marks the beginning of the winter season. The lanterns that the children carry through the street are meant to protect them from the darkness of winter.

Please fill out the permission slip (below).

Cost per child (Lantern Festival + A Visit of St. Nicholas: $10.00)  Please pay by November 4, 2009.

October  2008

Dear Parents:

Get in the spirit of celebrating the beauty of fall.

This year’s LANTERN FESTIVAL will take place at the beginning of November.

Date: Monday, November 10, 2008             Time: 5:30 PM- 6:30 PM

(Rain date: November 17, 2008, same time)

We will have regular classes from 4:15 PM- 5:20 PM.

At 5:25 PM all parents/ guardians are asked to come back to German School and wait for their children in front of the building or assist their children’s teachers.

After the parade students, teachers and parents will go back to their classrooms to pick up their unique St.

Monday, December  1,  2008:          regular classes

St. Nicholas will visit all good boys and girls of the Language School.

December 15, 2008: regular classes + Winterfest  (Monday Session) - Time: 5:00 PM

SCHOOL CALENDAR – IN PRINT AND ON THE WEB

We encourage students and family members to keep the calendar handy and use it as a planning tool. Please check the web site frequently to view calendar updates, newsletters and school closings: www.germanlanguageschoolwhiteplains.org

ELECTRONIC MAIL – YOUR FASTEST FORM OF ONGOING COMMUNICATION

We invite parents and staff members to connect through e-mail frequently. E-mail provides a private, direct, connection between staff members and parents/guardians. We have found that e-mail is more effective than phone calls as teachers and parents are not always available for phone conversations at the same time.

ATTENDANCE – KEY TO SUCCESS!

Good attendance supports success! We want students to be in school for every class. If a student must be absent, parents should send an E-Mail to Langsdsny@aol.com or call the school   (914) 948 6513 Ext. 203 before 4:00 PM. Parents should clearly say the name of the student, give the grade level of the student, and tell us how long the student will be absent, or if the student will be arriving later in the day.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL

We work to keep students as safe as possible before, after, and during classes. Parents, guardians, and students can help by following a few simple procedures. Students should enter and leave the German School New York through the main entrance doors.                                                                                                                                  Students are not supervised prior to 4:15 PM. It’s the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to supervise them. When students arrive, they should wait with their parent/guardian in the main lobby of the German School New York.
At 4:15 PM, after the sound of the bell, teachers will receive their students in the main lobby and accompany them to their classrooms.  At 6:30 PM teachers will accompany their students to the lobby and release them to their parent/guardian.   Mr. William and Mr. Jattan, the school’s building managers, will also provide assistance and support.

Students whose parents/guardians are delayed have to wait in the lobby of the German School New York.

BREAK TIME:  Students have a break from 5:30 PM .till 5:42 PM. Students should bring nutritious snacks for themselves (e.g., fruit, sandwiches, water, juice etc.). “Junk food” like candy bars, chips, etc. are not appropriate.

IMPORTANT STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP INFORMATION!

We are always concerned about the safety of our students. The following procedures help us to keep our students safe during high traffic times.
Parents/ Guardians driving their children to school are expected to drop them off in the main parking lot and accompany them inside the building. Please circle around the parking lot counter clockwise. Please do not use the bus loop in front of the school to drop off/ pick up students.  .
We appreciate everyone’s effort to promote safety, respect, and responsibility.

FIRE DRILLS

Regularly held fire drills are mandated by law.  Once the fire alarm is heard, all students, visitors, and personnel are instructed and are to comply with all regulations regarding safety.

     School Rules

Learn the basic classroom rules to have a safe and productive year.

He/ She will be happy to advise parents on the best resources to provide support.
